Panel discussion: Good corporate governance – no longer a forgone conclusion
Ethics and leadership has been catapulted to the forefront of SA Inc’s. key risks and raised alarm bells among the local and international investment community. In this session we engage leaders who have directly had to deal with the aftermath of governance missteps and unpack the role of Investor Relations in supporting leaders.

MODERATOR: Nikki Catrakilis-Wagner: Investor Relations Director, Tiger Brands
Nikki joined Tiger Brands in 2014 and was the Founding Chairperson of the Investor Relations Society. Her prior IR experience includes senior executive roles at Hyprop Investments, Fineo Investor Relations Advisors, Sasol Limited and Gold Fields. Nikki’s academic record includes an MBA and a BCom (Honours) in Economics.

Tunishiya Mudely
Tunishiya is a compliance executive and a qualified lawyer with more than 22 years experience in both legal & compliance roles in investment banks and corporates in Africa, the Middle East and Russia. She is a specialist in revising global corporate compliance programs for implementation in emerging markets, and is experienced in localising and implementing global policies tailored to specific markets. Her key skills include leading and working with multi-cultural, cross-functional teams across multiple geographies, and managing relationships with external stakeholders, including regulators & industry leaders.

Debbie Millar: Executive Treasury and Investor Relations, EOH
A CA (SA) by profession, Debbie has more than 25 years experience as a strategic finance team member and executive board member across a number of African telecommunications, IT and retail businesses. Her cross functional skill set includes funding, risk management and reputation matters. She has held key head office based executive roles during M&A activity, IPO’s, financial restructuring and specific reputational management challenges of listed companies. Debbie holds a CA(SA) and BCom (Honours).

Alwyn Fouchee: Head: Regulatory Compliance – Issuer Regulation, JSE
Before joining the JSE in November 2011 Alwyn practised commercial law with Hofmeyr, Herbstein & Gihwala in Sandton and Carey Olsen in Guernsey (Channel Islands). Alwyn holds a B.Proc.LL.B; LL.M, Corporate Law; LL.M, Banking and Stock Exchange Law

Avanthi Parboosing: Group Company Secretary, Life Healthcare
Avanthi has over 19 years’ experience in the areas of governance, ethics, risk and compliance, having served as a Group Company Secretary for numerous JSE listed companies including Implats and Kumba. Prior to her appointment at Life Healthcare in March 2019, Avanthi ran her own governance consultancy assisting listed companies in areas specific to strategic governance. Avanthi holds a Masters Degree in Political Science and International Relations.

Targeting – deciphering the data and the impact of MiFID II a year later
This session will unpack how targeting can be made easier and smarter in the context of new regulations. Alison will recap MiFID II, now a year old, and what it means in relation to targeting while providing practical considerations.

Presented by Alison Owers: CEO EMEA, Orient Capital
Since joining Orient Capital in June 2010 Alison has been instrumental in building the Orient Capital brand and D.F. King business across the UK and EMEA. Alison joined Orient Capital from Capita where she was MD of the Capita IR Services business, and previously managed the UK Client reporting team at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, specialising in shareholder analytics for UK large/mid cap companies. Alison is a Board Member of the UK IR Society.

A transforming world – the next 5 years – how does your investment proposition stack up?
The global economy is slowing but not slumping, opening the opportunity for more policy stimulus. However, the global backdrop has become more vulnerable. If the US-China trade war intensifies, global growth will take a bigger hit. The South African economy will not avoid the implications of an escalating trade war between the US and China, with some sectors proving more vulnerable than others. The success of President Ramaphosa’s proposed USD100 billion investor drive is necessary to shield the South African economy against these mounting global vulnerabilities and lift the country out of its growth slump. Thea will provide intelligence around global emerging markets and the South African economy, drivers behind the changes, and potential investment opportunities in South Africa as a result.

Thea is responsible for analysing and forecasting economic developments for the Southern African region (South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Zambia and Namibia, among other countries). Before joining IHS Markit she was a financial economist at ING Barings specialising in macro and financial economic analysis of the South African economy.
